Scholarship Essay-James "Rhio" O'Connor Memorial Scharship

Reading the background information on “Rhio” O’Connor, I see many similarities between the two of us. Like Rhio, I am compelled to follow my instincts to make better decisions about my life rather than relying on unsupported information and baseless recommendations.

James “Rhio” O’Conner received the deadly diagnosis of mesothelioma, yet pursued information on treatments, therapies, and alternatives until he developed his own protocol. His research involved patients, doctors, and researchers as well as independent study. Through his intense efforts and optimism, Rhio lived five years later than his prognosis dictated.

Mesothelioma is a cancer that invades the sac protecting most of the body’s organs. Incurable unless it is found while still localized, this disease is mainly found in those with prolonged exposure to asbestos and the people who live with them.

As a mother, it is my job to raise my children to be the best they can be and to teach them not to accept negativity in life. If I am faced with a deadly disease of any kind, it would be my mission to live as long as possible so that I can continue to raise my children and be a positive influence in their lives. I can fully imagine sitting in a physician’s office, being given a poor prognosis. I can also imagine that I would not make any treatment decisions until I was fully informed from as many sources as possible.

Following Rhio’s example, it is important to step back and take the time to question and research the current protocols. This would apply to any situation that is life-changing, whether it is disease or divorce, career or family. What works for one does not mean it works for all, especially when the human body is concerned. Much work has been done to study the miracle of life and the body’s abilities to heal itself, but this work is far from over. New findings are constantly revealed. This would never happen if we all simply accepted status quo.

Possessing a positive attitude is just as or more important than modern medicine alone. Giving up is not an option, and optimism can help a person push through the tough parts and long days. If good news is hard to find, then try harder.

Having a strong support system is imperative, as no one can go through significant events, such as cancer, alone. I would do my best to rely on those around me, and to ask the same questions of them that I ask myself. This support system holds a wealth of knowledge and experience that I would use to dig deeper in my quest for information and solutions.

The Internet also has so much available research. As part of my college library, I would use the various databases to access the multitude of information offered. Armed with the facts and figures, I would pursue clinical trials, new studies, and developing theories. What would be left to lose? If the prognosis is not a good one, only positive results can come from pushing and pursing better and different treatments. My obligation to my children is to try everything and keep asking. It is in my nature to seek the desired outcome by asking new questions.

There is no better source for answers and realistic expectations than other patients with similar diseases. I would pursue my same line of questioning to find what has been successful and what has led to a better quality of life. No one can know except a fellow survivor, and no one else can provide comparable insight. How can a doctor relate pain levels and describe outcomes if he or she has not experienced this disease?

I will choose my primary source of information with as much care and time as I can afford. I will choose a physician who has the experience necessary to make hard decisions with me as well as an open-mind when seeking alternative solutions. Knowing that I will not simply accept standard protocols, I will find someone who supports my decisions and will be honest, yet open to my ideas and research. This will be the first and most important challenge in my quest for effective treatment.

There are many obstacles and roadblocks in the pursuit of health. By using the resources available and maintaining a positive outlook, I will open avenues that did not exist previously. I will find new resources, seek new alternatives, and develop better treatment option for myself and other patients fighting mesothelioma.
